Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL — In game one of a three-game set, the Chicago Cubs crushed the New York Mets 12 to 4 thanks to potent offense and a quality start from starter Edward Cabrera.
Cubs starter Edward Cabrera would pitch six innings in a quality start, giving up 3 runs and fanning four on his way to earning his second win of the season.
The Cubs would draw first blood early.
Michael Busch drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first. Bregman hit a single to right field to put runners on the corners with one away. Two batters later, Seiya Suzuki would plate the first run with an RBI single to right field, putting the Cubs ahead 1-0. One batter later, Moisés Ballesteros would launch a homer to left field, putting the Cubs up 4-0.
The Mets responded with offense of their own in the top of the second.
A base hit from Francisco Alvarez started the inning. One batter later, MJ Melendez hit a single to put two on with no one away. Marcus Semien would push their first runner home with an RBI double, to cut into the lead 4-1. Tyrone Taylor would keep the line moving, hitting a two-run double, to make it 4-3 Chicago, but would be thrown out trying to take second base.
The Cubs would score again in the bottom of the second.
After Dansby Swanson drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the second, Nico Hoerner mashed a no-doubter to left field to add to the Cubs’ lead 6-3. Hoerner hit his 3rd home run of the season and drove in his 20th run so far.
The Cubs would add on to their lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Swanson hit a one-out infield single in the bottom of the fourth that ultimately chased Met’s starter Kodai Senga out of the game. Hoerner would follow up with an infield single, and so would Michael Busch to load the bases. Happ would reach first an error from first baseman Brett Bady, making it 7-3 Chicago.
The offensive outpouring from the Cubs would continue in the bottom of the seventh.
Suzuki would pick up a hit on a double to the right field corner with one out. One batter later, Matt Shaw would bring him home with an RBI double, making it 8-3 Chicago.
Carson Kelly would reach base on an infield single, and Pete Crow Armstrong would draw a walk to load the bases. Another run would score thanks to a wild pitch, putting Chicago ahead 9-3. Swanson would hit an RBI sac fly to left, making it 10-3 Cubs.
The Mets cut into Chicago’s lead in the top of the eighth.
Francisco Lindor would collect an infield single, and Luis Robert Jr would hit a double to put two in scoring position with no one out. Alvarez would drive in Lindor with an RBI infield single to make it 10-4, Chicago.
The scoreboard just kept lighting up for the Cubs. Busch led off the top of the eighth with a base hit to the right side of the infield. Two batters later, Happ would tee off on the first pitch to left field for a homer, putting the Cubs ahead 12-4.

The Good: Nico Hoerner continues his tear at the plate — batting .342, with 3 homers and 20 RBI, including a two-run shot in today’s game. Hoerner went 3-5 at the plate and also made a diving stop to take away a hit from Bo Bichette in top of the fifth.
The Bad/The Ugly: Met’s starter Kodai Senga gave up six earned runs over 3 and a third innings, including two home runs. Additionally, a fielding error from 1B Brett Bady would cause a run to score in the fourth inning.
The Cubs and Mets continue their three-game series tomorrow, with the first pitch set for 1:20 PM.
