Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH — In the opening game of a three-game series, the New York Yankees took down the Cleveland Guardians 7-5 thanks to a two-run single from Cody Bellinger in the 10th inning.
The Yankees opened the scoring in the top of the first inning thanks to the long ball.
After Ben Rice worked a walk, Paul Goldschmidt launched a ball to left field to put the Yankees ahead 2-0.
The Yankees would strike again in the top of the third inning.
Trent Grisham and Ben Rice would reach base, and then Cody Bellinger would ground into an RBI to put the Yankees up 3-0.
The Guardians would respond by tying the game in the bottom of the third inning.
After Steven Kwan worked a walk and Patrick Bailey hit a double, a wild pitch would score Kwan to cut into the lead 3-1. Brayan Rocchio would hit an RBI groundout to cut into the lead 3-2. After Jose Ramirez reached on a single and was pushed to third by Chase DeLauter’s single, Kyle Manzardo would hit into an error that would tie the game at 3 apiece.
The Yankees would score in the top of the fifth, breaking the tie ballgame.
Ryan McMahon would lead off the top of the fifth with a deep fly to deep left-center field to break the tie, 4-3 New York.
The Guardians would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
David Fry worked a lead-off walk in the bottom of the sixth inning, and one batter later, Martinez crushed a ball to deep right-center field to put the Guardians back in front 5-4 with a two-run homer.
The Yankees would tie the game in the top of the eighth inning.
Grisham dropped in a lead-off single to left-center field in the top of the eighth inning. Ben Rive would hit a single to right field to push Grisham to third with no one out. One batter later, Paul Goldschmidt would ground into a fielder’s choice RBI to tie the game at 5 apiece.
The Yankees would score twice in the top of the 10th inning.
After the Yankees loaded the bases with two walks, Bellinger delivered with a two-run single to left field to seal the game 7-5.

The Good: Rocchio made a spectacular diving play to save a run in the top of the eighth inning to keep the game tied at 5 apiece.
The Bad/The Ugly: Cleveland reliever Shawn Armstrong ultimately surrendered the winning runs in the top of the 10th inning and did not have his best day out of the bullpen.
